چکیده
1. Thermodynamic Relations and Poisson Statistics The thermodynamically guided tailoring of surface morphologies aims at depressing the heterogeneous ice nucleation rate by unfavorable thermodynamic conditions stemming from the surface/droplet interaction. The theoretical framework for this surface morphology tailoring can be established by invoking the use of the classical heterogeneous nucleation theory (CNT), which predicts the rate of formation of a critically sized ice embryo to be[1-3]

Saltwater icephobicity: Influence of surface chemistry on saltwater icing
Most studies on icephobicity focus on ice formation with pure water. This manuscript presents studies to understand the influence of surfaces on saltwater ice nucleation and propagation. Experiments are conducted to quantify the influence of surface chemistry on saltwater ice nucleation and to understand the utility of superhydrophobic surfaces for saltwater icephobicity. These experiments are ...
متن کاملFrom superhydrophobicity to icephobicity: forces and interaction analysis
The term "icephobicity" has emerged in the literature recently. An extensive discussion took place on whether the icephobicity is related to the superhydrophobicity, and the consensus is that there is no direct correlation. Besides the parallel between the icephobicity and superhydrophobicity for water/ice repellency, there are similarities on other levels including the hydrophobic effect/hydro...
متن کاملExtraordinary shifts of the Leidenfrost temperature from multiscale micro/nanostructured surfaces.
In the present work, the effects of surface chemistry and micro/nanostructuring on the Leidenfrost temperature are experimentally investigated. The functional surfaces were fabricated on a 304 stainless steel surface via femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP). The droplet lifetime experimental method was employed to determine the Leidenfrost temperature for both machine-polished and textur...
متن کاملAnti-Icing Superhydrophobic Surfaces: Controlling Entropic Molecular Interactions to Design Novel Icephobic Concrete
Tribology involves the study of friction, wear, lubrication, and adhesion, including biomimetic superhydrophobic and icephobic surfaces. The three aspects of icephobicity are the low ice adhesion, repulsion of incoming water droplets prior to freezing, and delayed frost formation. Although superhydrophobic surfaces are not always icephobic, the theoretical mechanisms behind icephobicity are sim...
متن کاملNanostructuring Platinum Nanoparticles on Ni/Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ Anode for Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cell via Single-step Infiltration: A Case Study
With the aim of promoting the Ni/Ce0.8Gd0.2O2-δ (Ni/GDC20) cermet anodic performance of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC) [1], nanostructuring platinum nanoparticles on NiO/GDC composite was done by single-step wet-infiltration of hexachloroplatinic acid hexahydrate (H2PtCl6.6H2O) precursor on NiO/GDC20 composite. The anodic polarization resistance was measured using symmetr...
